Understand paper grades
Many people believe that brightness is the decisive factor in the classification of paper. But this is not the case. Because brightness is no longer the only factor that determines paper grades, opacity, formulation, printability, and marketing methods all have an impact on paper grades.
Paper of good quality and high brightness naturally has a high production cost. The brightness of paper depends on fillers and chemicals. They can not only bring blue and white tones to the paper, but also improve the stability and printability of the paper on the printing press. Therefore, the higher the grade, the higher the price of the paper, and the higher the brightness, the better the printability.
Lower basis weight
Even when printing on modern equipment, paper is still sold by weight, so heavier paper will be 10% to 20% more expensive than other paper. Lightweight paper uses less fiber, so production costs are low. If appropriate, 50 grams of lightweight inner paper can be used instead of 60 grams of inner paper, which can save a lot of costs.
Make full use of page size
When designing products, designers must think about whether the final size of this product meets the requirements for machine printing, and choose the most economical paper according to the product size.
If you want to make full use of paper, you can solicit the opinion of the printing factory in the early stage of product design, and try to adjust the product size to the state of saving paper. Sometimes as long as the size is shortened by 1/8 inch, a lot of paper cost can be saved.
Solve the bleeding problem
There has been a saying before: "Don't forget the bleeding of the page, otherwise it will pay a heavy price." This really makes sense. But at what cost? Whether the customer's order requires single-sided or four-sided bleeding, it will increase the printing cost by 5% ~ 10%. Therefore, the customer can determine whether hemorrhage is needed according to the demand of the product and the selected paper.
In addition, printing on offset, opaque or coated paper should provide a variety of paper sizes, so that the printing house can easily find the space needed for bleeding.
Choose the right printing method
For offset printing, the greater the number of prints, the lower the unit cost. In some cases, digital printing may not be as competitive as traditional printing, but if there are some urgent jobs that need to be printed, it will require digital printing. For short-run color printing, digital printing is the most ideal solution.
