Emsln venta-Fischer of Berlin, Germany, plans to industrialize polylactic acid (PLA) biodegradable polymeric materials. The PLA is said to use starch as raw material and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
The production method is to convert corn, rye or wheat into lactic acid through continuous fermentation, and then to polymerize into PLA. The maximum annual production capacity is 100,000 tons, the production cost is 1.25 EUR/kg, and the cost is 2.00 EUR for 3,000 tons/year production capacity. / Kilogram, compared with other industrial degradable plastics, has a strong price competitiveness. Products can be used to make degradable instrument boxes and bags. It is said that the company is currently developing a fiber-grade PLA process and is expected to be successfully developed in two years.
The company will work with investors to build a demonstration plant in eastern Germany that will invest 30 million U.S. dollars and have a capacity of 3,000 tons per year. It will prepare to expand production capacity to 25,000 tons per year for a construction period of 18 months. According to the person in charge of the company’s marketing department, the company is currently negotiating with several Chinese customers to discuss technical licensing issues.
