Fall has arrived, and design events are springing up across the globe. Those fortunate enough to attend have been sharing insights into the latest trends shaping the industry among European and North American designers. This is also a key period for experts in home decor to reflect on what's trending and what's fading away, with numerous style updates gracing the pages of magazines.
Here’s what we’re observing from both trend forecasters and creators.
Bold Geometrics Continue to Lead the Way
It's typical for ideas to move from the catwalk to home decor, and this trend remains strong. These geometric patterns are prominently featured in Metropolis' top textile picks for the year, and manufacturers are incorporating them into their tile collections.
For instance, this collection from Alessandro Zambelli, showcased at the London Design Show, is making waves in furniture design.
Hexagonal Tiles: Still Fresh and Trendy
Speaking of tiles, hexagonal patterns continue to be popular. Over the past few years, they've gained significant traction. Available in various colors and materials, you're not limited to the classic small white designs. You can mix and match different colors and materials, as seen in this example. Hexagonal tiles work well on both walls and floors and are perfect for creating stunning backsplashes in kitchens and bathrooms.
Porcelainosa's LUXE MIRROR HEXAGON tile collection is a great example.
There are also rustic vintage tiles in this home featured in Dwell, and some beautiful takes on them in Apartment Therapy.
Handmade Aesthetic Returns
In a world obsessed with machine precision, slight imperfections can bring a touch of charm. Traditional Moorish, Victorian, and country tile styles, with their hand-painted and handmade aesthetics, are making a comeback. Remodelista highlights some of these beautiful examples.
Contrasting Tableware
At the NY NOW design trade show, Canadian House and Home noticed a variety of bold yet harmonious contrasts in tableware.
Diverse Finishes and Materials
Gone are the days of worrying about matching upper and lower cabinets or countertops. This trend has really taken off in 2016, according to Elle Decor, and our customers love it.
Automation Takes Center Stage
Smart appliances and kitchen features that operate seamlessly have been a highlight at the Consumer Electronics Show for years. Home automation remains popular among those who can afford it, but it needs to become more affordable before it becomes mainstream.
Touchless features continue to impress, as seen at the 2016 London Design Festival, where Arredo3 and Quartzforms presented a kitchen countertop with motion sensors. Simply wave your hand to activate the sink or faucets.
Creating Divided Spaces
As homes get smaller, the last few decades have seen a shift from separate rooms for everything to open-plan living. It makes sense in urban settings to have an open layout on the ground floor for entertaining. However, the downside includes increased noise and cooking odors spreading throughout the house, along with cooks feeling uncomfortable with guests seeing the chaos of meal prep. We're noticing a desire for functional separation when budgets and square footage permit.
Some examples:
- Enclosed dining kitchens with separate, more formal dining rooms are back. The New York Times reported that many property developers are almost exclusively installing enclosed kitchens in 2016. Pocket doors are also being used as a compromise.
- Private nooks for personal retreats are in demand. Instead of having the office in the family room, people are craving a quiet getaway to scroll through social media in peace.
Matte Black Metallics
From Elle Decor to the Wall Street Journal, designers are discussing the appeal of flat black metal in everything from furniture to plumbing fixtures, including flat black stainless steel refrigerators (fewer fingerprints!).
One issue with the copper trend (which many sources say is now outdated) is that cheap imitations don't look good. If you invested in quality copper and it still works, keep it. Otherwise, it's time for a change.
Parquet Flooring: A Rising Star Among Designers
Before you cringe, let’s clarify: we’re not referring to the 3.5-inch square tiles that were ubiquitous in the 1970s.
The new parquet is more of an elegant herringbone pattern reminiscent of designs used by European royalty (you can see it in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles). Parquet was also a staple of mid-century modern design before it became the go-to budget flooring choice for contractors a few decades ago. In Europe, chic versions of parquet are still gaining popularity.
A word of advice: don't install parquet if you're planning to sell your home. Although it’s an emerging trend, buyers still tend to shy away from it.
