Learn how to create a cozy doll mattress with this simple tutorial. This essential piece of bedding will provide comfort and enhance all the other items you craft for your doll. In this fifth installment of my doll bedding series, I’ll guide you through making an 18-inch doll mattress. Additionally, I’ve included a formulaic approach so you can adjust this mattress pattern to fit any size bed.

To get started, gather the necessary supplies:
For the doll mattress, you'll need approximately half a yard (0.90 meters) of fabric. Cotton fabric is ideal because it’s easy to work with. I chose quilting cotton, which is lightweight and tightly woven, offering a variety of designs and colors. If you don’t have stuffing on hand, consider using fabric scraps instead. While they may make the mattress slightly heavier, they serve as an economical alternative. Just cut the scraps into small pieces to reduce lumpiness.

Begin by measuring the base of your doll bed. For example, the bed I used, bought from IKEA, measures 12 by 19 inches (30.5x48.2 cm) at its wooden base.
**Pro Tip:** Ensure you're only measuring the base, not the sides of the bed. You want the doll mattress to fit snugly within the bed frame.
Next, cut two pieces of fabric to match the dimensions of the doll bed base, adding a 1-inch (2.5 cm) seam allowance all around. For instance, if your base is 12x19", you'd cut pieces that are 14x21 inches (35.5x53.3 cm).

With the right sides facing each other, stitch around the edges of the mattress pieces using a ¼-inch (6 mm) seam allowance. Leave a 3-inch (7.5 cm) gap along one of the shorter sides. Always aim for a clean finish by leaving your gap at the end of the bed.
Once stitched, box the corners by pressing the seams open at the corners and aligning the top and bottom of the seam. Mark a line 1.5 inches (4 cm) across. Boxing the corners adds height to the mattress.

Sew across the boxed corners and trim them straight across.

Flip the mattress right side out and begin stuffing it. Break the polyester filling into smaller tufts to achieve a flat, even appearance. Take care to stuff the corners well to maintain a proper shape.
Before closing the gap, test the mattress on your bed to ensure it lies flat. Spend extra time ensuring the mattress is stuffed evenly. After all, Dolly deserves a comfortable place to rest, and no fairy tale princess should settle for less!

Finally, hand-stitch the gap closed using a ladder stitch for an invisible finish.
