The International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) held its annual conference in Toronto from July 16-19, marking a historic event with record-breaking attendance. The official end of the pandemic and its associated restrictions likely played a role in drawing a diverse crowd from around the world. Attendees representing regulatory bodies, academia, industries, and advocacy groups convened to delve into pressing topics such as food safety culture, sustainability, and innovative industry practices.
Among the highlights was the recognition of Vikan's Global Hygiene Specialist, Deb Smith, who was awarded the prestigious Sanitarian of the Year title, sponsored by Ecolab. This honor underscores Deb's unwavering commitment and expertise in food safety. Her contributions included leading a pre-conference workshop on dry sanitation strategies and participating in a roundtable discussion on enhancing sanitation tools for small-to-medium-sized produce enterprises.
One particularly engaging session focused on fostering a strong food safety culture. Lone Jespersen, Principal of Cultivate SA, emphasized transitioning from mere compliance-driven cultures to deeply ingrained food safety mindsets within organizations. For further insights, you can join Remco's upcoming webinar on October 26th, featuring Jespersen alongside Amit M. Kheradia, Remco's Environmental Health and Sanitation Manager. Even if you miss the live event, recordings will be available via email.
The conference also addressed critical areas such as allergen management, pathogen monitoring, and the importance of hygienically designed equipment. Sustainability trends were another focal point, with discussions on reducing plastic waste and adopting eco-friendly practices. Notably, statistics revealed that a significant portion of plastic waste ends up in landfills, prompting discussions on updating regulations to permit greater use of recycled materials.
Pathogen monitoring saw significant attention post the 2022 US powdered infant formula outbreak. Consequently, Cronobacter sakazakii was slated to be added to the CDC’s notifiable diseases list by 2024. Other pathogens on the surveillance list include Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes.
Remco's poster on FDA inspectional observations, downloadable for further study, highlighted recurring weak points in food safety plans. This, coupled with Amit M. Kheradia’s accompanying presentation, was well received for its practical guidance on prioritizing equipment and sanitation improvements.
The conference concluded with inspiring remarks from Randy Huffman, Chief Food Safety & Sustainability Officer at Maple Leaf Foods, who reflected on the 2008 Canadian Listeriosis outbreak. He stressed the necessity of embedding proactive food safety measures within factory and supply chain operations.
The next IAFP Conference is scheduled for July 14-17, 2024, at the Long Beach Convention Center in California. Meanwhile, recent blog posts offer additional insights into topics like minimizing food waste, Vikan’s acquisition of Wells Australia and New Zealand, and foreign body prevention strategies. These resources continue to enrich the global dialogue on food safety and sustainability.
