Some customers choose a salt spray test chamber but don't understand why the air compressor must be used together. It's well known that compressed air is one of the most critical components in the operation of a salt spray test chamber. This compressed air is supplied by an air compressor, although it’s not necessarily a refrigeration compressor. But how exactly does an air compressor work?
An air compressor operates through an intake process, where it draws in outside air into the device. As the rotor rotates, one end of the teeth gradually separates, creating a space between them. This space expands over time, forming a vacuum. Since this area is only connected to the intake port, air flows in due to the pressure difference.
Once the intake phase is complete, the compression begins while simultaneously sealing and moving the air. At the end of the intake process, the tooth peaks of the main and auxiliary rotors are sealed against the housing, trapping the air inside the groove. After this sealing, as the rotors continue to turn, the tooth peaks align with the groove at the intake side, and the contact surface moves toward the exhaust side.
During the transport phase, the contact surface gradually moves toward the exhaust port, reducing the gap between the surface and the exhaust opening. This causes the gas in the groove to be compressed, increasing its pressure. Due to this pressure difference, lubricating oil is also injected into the compression chamber, mixing with the gas—a process known as oil injection.
For salt spray test chambers, the air compressor must meet specific requirements:
- **Exhaust Pressure**: ≥8 kg/cm²
- **Volume Flow Rate**: ≥0.12 m³/min
Tip: Air compressors are essential for the proper functioning of salt spray test chambers, but they are not typically included with the chamber itself. Since they belong to a different industry, manufacturers usually don’t supply them. If you're new to using a salt spray test chamber, make sure to prepare an air compressor that meets the above specifications before starting.
