Some customers choose a salt spray test chamber but are unsure why an air compressor must be used alongside it. It’s well known that compressed air is one of the most critical components in the operation of a salt spray test chamber. This compressed air is provided by an air compressor, although this type of compressor is not the same as a refrigeration compressor. So, how exactly does an air compressor work?
An air compressor operates through an intake process, where it draws in outside air into the device. As the rotor rotates, one end of the teeth gradually separates, creating a space between them. This space expands over time, forming a vacuum. Since this space is connected only to the intake port, air flows in due to the pressure difference.
Once the intake phase is complete, the compression process begins while also sealing and moving the air. At the end of the intake, the main and auxiliary rotor teeth meet the casing, trapping the air within the grooves. As the rotors continue to turn, the tooth peaks align with the groove at the intake side, and the contact surface gradually moves toward the exhaust side.
During the transport phase, the contact surface moves further toward the exhaust port, causing the gap between the surface and the exhaust port to shrink. The air trapped in the grooves is then compressed, increasing its pressure. At the same time, lubricating oil is injected into the compression chamber due to the pressure difference, mixing with the compressed air—a process known as oil injection.
For salt spray test chambers, the air compressor must meet specific requirements:
- Exhaust Pressure: ≥8 kg/cm²
- Volume Flow Rate: ≥0.12 m³/min
Tip: Air compressors are essential for the proper functioning of salt spray test chambers, but they are often not included with the chamber itself, as they belong to a different industry.
