Outdoor is a relatively broad concept. From the day of the trip to the camping overnight and multi-day crossing, from the group to the leader, the concept of outdoor activities is different, the choice of the knife in the field is also different. However, after playing for many years to play outdoors, there is no one in the equipment, how can you say that you are a real man!

This article is a small series to briefly introduce the characteristics of outdoor good knives, to help you choose a good knife, to show the man's glory and charm!

1. Excellent steel and heat treatment

The choice of steel and heat treatment process determines the hardness and retention of the tool, and even affects the sharpness of the tool to a certain extent. In the outdoors, we don't have enough conditions and time to polish the tools. Good outdoor tools can always be sharp in many days of use. Of course, there is also a theory in the survival knife of the army; that is, to reduce the hardness of the tool, in exchange for the convenience of grinding, but we are not using a knife to kill or smash the ammunition box, so if possible, bring a tool with good retention.

2. Not easy to rust

The outdoor weather and environment are changeable. Of course, you don't want the shiny steel knife to be rusted during outdoor activities. Relatively speaking, alloy steels containing elements such as chromium have a relatively high degree of rust resistance, and some high-carbon steel knives with better hardness are prone to rust without the protection of the surface coating rather than being the most suitable for outdoor use.

3. Simple structure

It is generally believed that folding knives are not as good as straight knives, which should be the case for difficult and long-term activities. In addition, in terms of straight knives and folding knives, because of the uncertainties such as climate change and mud contamination in the field, straight knives with complex knives and hollow screw-top boxes; complex folding and insurance mechanisms, folding knives with automatic cutting function It becomes unsuitable, not to mention the absolute reliability of complex equipment.

4. Firm body

For straight knives, outdoor knives should be stiff and the parts should be securely mounted. The knives of the full keel (simply the original steel strip extending to the shank) are considered more reliable, while the hollow shandle is relatively unreliable. Of course, the premise of this comparison is that the work is at an approximate level. For folding knives, outdoor knives should be locked securely, with safety devices or scabbards, at least during slashing and cutting, the folding knives will not disintegrate, accidentally unlock or accidentally unfold the blade.

5. Medium and medium thickness

The problem of a light knife is not a big problem, and it is not necessary to carry a knife that is too heavy and heavy. The difficulty of crossing or leading the team with a straight knife must be moderate, if it is too short, it will be weak; if it is too long, it will become a burden and it will be inconvenient to carry. The thickness should also be moderate. If it is too thick, it will be too heavy, and the sharpness will often drop (also refer to the grinding method); if it is too thin, the cutting strength will be reduced and the blade strength reliability will be insufficient.

It is advisable to use a tool with a total length of 32~38CM; it is advisable to use a small tool with a straight length of 25cm or less, and a full length of 18~23CM. In terms of thickness, it is better to use a tool with a thickness of 5~8MM, and a light tool (including a folding knife) is preferably 2.5~4MM.

6. Tool type

Since outdoor tools are mostly used for slashing and cutting, the cutter head is heavily used with a knife for planing type, flat head type and hook type head, and the light knife is equipped with a folding knife for back type, water drop type, and bird's beak type. In terms of the shape of the blade, the heavy knife is mostly a flat blade, and the half tooth can also be used; the light knife can be selected according to needs and likes.

7. Shank selection

The first requirement for outdoor knives for handle stocks is anti-slip. It is necessary to maintain the stability under the conditions of damp and gloves, so as to ensure that the safety hazard or the tool is lost in the strong use such as slashing, and the tool shank is not easily deformed under wet and cold conditions. In summary, some modern materials have obvious advantages in outdoor environments, while steel handle knives are too slippery, aluminum shank knives (including those that have been anodized and hard-plated) are easy to smear, and most shank surfaces are bright. It is not recommended for use as an outdoor knife.

8. Scabbard material and workmanship

Tool sheaths are commonly found in sheaths, K-sheaths (Kydex, acrylic and polyvinyl chloride-like plastics) and Cordura sheaths (Cordura, a high-toughness, wear-resistant and lightweight nylon fiber). Materials are also used in high-end mountaineering bags).

The Cordura sheath is of course good but not particularly common; the K sheath is good but some will be partially polished on the surface or coating of the cutter; the sheath is beautiful and comfortable, but some of the sheath will be plagued by water swelling or off-line, but the knife factory or This phenomenon can be avoided by the knife man after it has been treated with waxing.

The most important point of the scabbard selection is that the knives are stable. Whether it is a buckle or a card, it is necessary to ensure that the knives do not accidentally fall out and slide down in the sheath. Of course, the scabbard itself must be firm, disintegrated, cracked, loose. Take it off.

9. Folding knife locking and insurance

Locking refers to the mechanism inside the folding knife that holds the blade so that it does not accidentally retract after the blade is fully opened. Insurance refers to a mechanism that can hold the blade without accidental opening in the folded back state. Outdoor folding knives may involve certain slashing and other uses, and the locking must be reliable. In addition, the outdoor folding knife is best to have insurance or a good positioning mechanism (the positioning of the beads makes the blade not easily slide out), otherwise, it is recommended to carry the folding knife sheath to carry.
