Secto Design at the Finnish Institute in the UK & Ireland

Secto Design had the unique opportunity to curate the final exhibition at the Finnish Institute’s current location in Kings Cross, London. While the space doesn’t feature a traditional gallery, its large windows facing York Way offer a striking and dynamic backdrop. It was only natural that the elegant lamps from Secto Design be displayed here—casting light not just inside the Institute, but also onto the bustling streets of London, drawing attention from passersby.

In his opening remarks, architect Seppo Koho reflected on how Nordic light has shaped his design philosophy and the creation of the Secto Design lamp collection.

At the event, Seppo Koho, the creative force behind the lighting collection, shared his deep connection with nature and how it influences his architectural vision. He spoke about how natural light patterns from Finland inspired the design of the lamps, blending functionality with aesthetic beauty. Joakim Jusélius, co-owner of Secto Design, emphasized the brand's commitment to sustainability. From eco-friendly packaging to long-term environmental goals, he highlighted how green practices are deeply embedded in the company’s culture.

Joakim Jusélius outlined the upcoming Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) report, which will provide a transparent view of the company’s environmental impact.

Also present was Gary Thornton, director of Nulty, an award-winning lighting design firm. He discussed the role of sustainable lighting in creating circular economies within architecture. His speech focused on collaboration, innovation, and long-term design solutions that minimize environmental harm. The conversation continued among guests over Kyrö Distillery’s famous Napue gin and traditional Finnish snacks, making for a lively and inspiring evening.

“Secto Design’s exhibition has brought warmth and light to the Institute during the dark season,” said Jaakko Nousiainen, director of the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland. “The installation outside our windows has captured the attention of many who walk by, creating a sense of curiosity and admiration.”

The Finnish Institute serves as a cultural bridge between Finland and the UK, promoting arts, education, and exchange. In addition to its cultural mission, it also functions as a polling station for Finnish presidential elections. This year, it welcomed nearly 600 voters on the first round. After the exhibition and voting end on February 4th, the Institute will move to a new location at Somerset House, where Secto Design’s table and floor lamps will soon illuminate the space, adding a modern touch to the neoclassical surroundings.
