Secto Design at the Finnish Institute in the UK & Ireland

Secto Design had the unique opportunity to curate the final exhibition at the Finnish Institute’s current location in Kings Cross, London. While the space doesn’t feature a traditional gallery, its large windows facing York Way offer a dynamic and public-facing platform. What better place for Secto’s elegant lamps than right there, casting light not only into the building but also onto the bustling streets of London?

In his opening speech, architect Seppo Koho reflected on how the Nordic light has shaped his design philosophy and inspired the creation of the Secto Design lamp collection.

At the exhibition's opening, Seppo Koho, the creative force behind the lighting collection, shared his deep connection with nature and how it influences his architectural approach. He spoke about the subtle interplay between light and space, drawing from the natural patterns found in Finland. Meanwhile, Joakim Jusélius, co-owner of Secto Design, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainability. From eco-friendly packaging to long-term environmental strategies, he emphasized that green practices are deeply embedded in the brand’s identity.

Factory CEO Joakim Jusélius shared details about the upcoming Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) report, which will provide a transparent view of the brand’s environmental impact.

Also speaking was Gary Thornton, director of Nulty, an award-winning lighting design firm. He discussed the importance of creating sustainable and impactful lighting solutions within the framework of a circular economy. Emphasizing collaboration and thoughtful design, he encouraged the industry to build projects that are both beautiful and environmentally responsible. The discussions continued well after the presentations, as guests enjoyed Finnish Napue gin and traditional snacks while engaging in lively conversations.

“Secto Design’s exhibition has created a warm and inviting atmosphere at the Institute,” said Jaakko Nousiainen, director of the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland. “It has brought light to the dark season and drawn attention from passers-by who have paused to admire the installation outside our windows.”

The Finnish Institute serves as a cultural bridge between Finland and the UK, hosting events and offering services to the local Finnish community. In addition, it functions as an advance polling station for the Finnish Presidential election. This year, it welcomed over 600 voters during the first round of voting. As the exhibition and voting period conclude on February 4th, the Institute will move to a new location at Somerset House by the River Thames.

“We’re excited to welcome visitors to vote and experience the exhibition at the same time. After the move, we’ll be showcasing Secto Design’s table and floor lamps in our new space. These pieces will add a modern, elegant touch to the neoclassical setting of Somerset House,” added Nousiainen.
