According to overseas news media reports, German chemical company Digossa Huers and Kurpp Uhde recently reached an agreement to jointly develop a new process for the production of propylene oxide.
Propylene oxide is a basic chemical used primarily for the production of polyurethanes and polyester resins. The two companies plan to develop a new process that produces propylene oxide by catalytic oxidation of propylene with hydrogen oxide. The current production processes for propylene oxide are mainly the chloroethanol process and the propylene oxide/styrene monomer (POSM) process. The use of the chloroethanol process results in the production of waste liquids, whereas the use of the PEMS process results in the production of large quantities of styrene monomer by-products.
The two companies said that the new process they plan to develop not only reduces costs but also avoids the creation of by-products.
